After failing to capture a Grand Slam title, Alexander Zverev could be adopting a different approach as he was spotted training with Toni Nadal, former coach and uncle of tennis legend Rafael Nadal, in Mallorca.
The German superstar has come close to Grand Slam success on three occasions, falling in the final each time. However, Zverev's decision to work with Toni Nadal might indicate he's willing to try something new, although the results will depend on the 28-year old, says former WTA World No.1 Dinara Safina.
After falling to defending champion Jannik Sinner in the final of this year's Australian Open, Zverev suffered several shock losses en route to the French Open. The former World No.2 would break out of his funk by winning the BMW Open at home, but would fall to 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals at Roland Garros.
A disappointing first round loss at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships might have been the straw that broke the camel's back. Following his disheartening performance at SW19, Zverev travelled to Spain where he spent a few days training at the Rafael Nadal Academy, under the watchful eye and guidance of Toni Nadal.
The retired Russian WTA star believes Toni Nadal's no-nonsense approach might be what Zverev needs in order to finally take the next step in his hunt for Grand Slam glory. However, the German's willingness to listen and apply what he learns will play a huge role in his quest, according to Safina.
"It will be exciting to watch," said the former WTA World No.1. "Toni is very straightforward. I do not know how willing Alexander is to change and integrate someone else into his team.
"We will see. It seems to me that a lot will depend on Alexander in this collaboration, on his willingness to change, listen and try new things. Of course, I wish him all the best."
Zverev is the top seed at the ongoing Canadian Open. The Hamburg native defeated Australian Adam Walton in straight sets in his opening round match, and will now face Italian Matteo Arnaldi for a spot in the round of 16.
