A taste of the unexpected: Elena Rybakina serves up 6-1 breadstick to Iga Swiatek in Roland Garros
Sipa Press

Elena Rybakina quickly took the lead in her fourth-round match against Iga Swiatek at the French Open. What's striking is that it was a decisive 6-1, with the Pole showing no reaction to Rybakina's remarkable start.

In one of the most erratic performances seen from the Pole on clay courts – and likely in her previous 40 matches at Roland Garros – she has had no answer to an incredible display by Rybakina, who took a 6-1 lead in the first set. The Kazakhstani has capitalized on Swiatek's constant unforced errors, coupled with an exceptionally aggressive game.

After a 5-0 start, the former Wimbledon champion squandered two set points before Swiatek won her first game. Nevertheless, Rybakina closed the set on serve (on her third set point) with a 6-1 score.

There is still hope for Swiatek, who will look to overcome this tough start against Rybakina in the second set. Can the four-time French Open champion turn things around?
