With the US Open adopting a new format for the mixed doubles event beginning this year, Australian tennis ace Alex de Minaur has sent out a last minute plea to compete at the event.

The revamped mixed doubles tournament at Flushing Meadows will see several top ATP and WTA singles stars team up in an effort to capture Grand Slam glory. The new format will see a reduction in the number of games, as the event will be held over two days prior to the start of the singles tournaments.

Several high-profile teams have already been announced for the mixed doubles tournament, with the likes of Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu, Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud, and Jannik Sinner and Emma Navarro joining the field.

There have been 14 teams selected thus far, with two spots remaining for wildcard entrants. In a post on his social media account, De Minaur sent out a plea asking the US Open organizers to grant him and fiancé, WTA star Katie Boulter, one of the two final spots.

They are already an established team, says De Minaur

“Katie and I would like to ask for a WC pretty pretty please," wrote De Minaur on Twitter.

The 26-year old is coming off a title run at last week's DC Open, where he defeated Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a thrilling final. During the event in Washington, De Minaur initiated his quest for a wildcard at the US Open mixed doubles event as he stated he and Boulter already have great chemistry together, unlike other teams.

"Yeah, I mean, we’d be definitely asking for a wildcard, and we’re definitely hoping for a wildcard," said De Minaur. "I think, you know, yeah, why not give a little bit of love to a tennis couple? You know, we have been going strong. It’s been what, five years already, getting married next year. I think we’re showing that there is good chemistry between us.
“I think some of the other partnerships, they haven’t really said a word to each other in their lives, right? At least we kind of know each other, so we can hopefully show some good chemistry and hopefully play some good matches there."
