Alexander Zverev has opened up about a fresh injury concern following his defeat to Taylor Fritz at the Six Kings Slam.
It was another frustrating outing for Zverev, who fell in straight sets to the American during the exhibition event in Saudi Arabia.
Fritz has now beaten Zverev seven times in a row, making it 10 wins overall as he remains a difficult matchup for the World No. 3.
After the match, Zverev revealed he’s dealing with a new injury that could force him to miss some upcoming events.
Zverev recently withdrew from Germany’s United Cup squad due to personal reasons, with Jan-Lennard Struff taking his place. However, after his match against Fritz, he shared that there may have been more behind his absence than initially stated.
Zverev has had his share of injury problems recently, dealing with both back and toe issues as the season wore on.
Now, the toll of another long ATP Tour campaign seems to have caught up with him again, as he spoke about picking up another knock.
“This year has been difficult physically; I’ve had a lot of problems, a lot of injuries. Unfortunately, I have another one today,” Zverev said after the match.
“I had this [shoulder injury] problem today, which was unfortunate because I’d been training really well the last few days. It happened during the warm-up, so it was a bit unlucky for me.”
Zverev didn’t say whether this latest issue would keep him out of what’s left in 2025. But there’s already talk that he might call time on his season early.
Zverev’s schedule still includes stops at the Paris Masters and ATP Finals, though both appearances could now be in doubt.
Zverev may want to view this latest injury as a clear signal that it’s time to step away from tennis for a while.
Even though he’s still holding onto a top-five ranking, 2025 hasn’t been short on tough losses and setbacks for him.
He was visibly upset after his first-round exit at Wimbledon and later said he’d sought ‘professional help’ following the defeat.
The Laver Cup and the ATP Tour’s Asian swing only added more frustration, leaving little left in the season for him to gain much from.
A break until January could be just what he needs as he continues his pursuit of a first Grand Slam title.
