Alexander Zverev continues his quest for United Cup success with Germany with a tough test against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz.

Zverev played a key role in Germany’s opener against the Netherlands, where he clinched the winning point for his side.

Eva Lys beat Suzan Lamens in the Group F opener, with Zverev then overcoming Tallon Griekspoor 7-5, 6-0.

Zverev then partnered with Laura Siegemund to defeat Griekspoor and Demi Schuurs and earn Germany a 3-0 win.

Alexander Zverev praises Hubert Hurkacz before United Cup match

Up next is one of his ATP Tour rivals Hurkacz, who Zverev beat as Germany won the 2024 United Cup final.

When asked by the media if he thinks that result has any bearing on their upcoming tie, the German said: “I think two years ago is more positive for us than for them, for sure.

“But a lot of things have changed in the last two years. He was struggling with injury, as well, over the last couple of years.

“I know Hubie is a great player, for sure. We’ve had tough matches. We have tough battles. Again, it’s his first match after an injury.

“We’ve already played today. Hopefully it will be maybe a little bit of an advantage for us. Yeah, we’ll see how it goes tomorrow.”

Eva Lys upbeat ahead of United Cup tie with Iga Swiatek

Zverev’s teammate Lys was also reminded of her one-sided rivalry with WTA superstar Iga Swiatek ahead of their match.

The Pole has won all three of their career meetings so far, with Lys saying of their clash: “I mean, new year, new me.

“I feel like in tennis everything’s possible. I mean, I’ve been getting closer, that’s one thing I’m holding onto.

“Yeah, definitely every match I play with her, I’m going to go out and I’m going to play my best tennis. I mean, she has good days, she has worse days. I also have my good days.

“Especially after the end of last year, I’m just trying to focus on my game and do something a little better that she didn’t like last time.”

Swiatek beat Lys in Stuttgart back in 2022, and added two more wins to their head-to-head this year in Canada and at the Australian Open.

The Pole beat Angelique Kerber in the 2024 final before Hurkacz lost to Zverev, who then partnered with Siegemund to defeat the Polish duo and clinch the title.
