Just for the second time in her already highly tenured career, Coco Gauff was forced to retire mid-match as she crashed out of this year’s edition of Indian Wells due to an apparent left arm injury during her match against Alexandra Eala.
Although Gauff entered the match on the back of a solid opening-round win, something felt off as she struggled to even win points on her service game, failing to hold serve once throughout the match.
What many suspected was later confirmed when the American took a medical timeout just before the end of the first set for a left arm issue. After the match, the player confirmed the problem began affecting her as early as the second game.
“We’re going to figure out what it is tomorrow, but based off the feeling, being told that it’s probably something nerve-related. Never had anything like this before, never felt anything, a sensation like this before. And then as the match played, it got progressively worse, even when I wasn’t using my arm on shots that I wasn’t even using my left arm for.”
Ultimately, it proved too much for Gauff. Down a set and a break, she was forced to retire from the match despite attempting to play through the discomfort out of respect for her opponent and friend Eala.
Despite the circumstances, Alexandra Eala, who was routed by Gauff just a couple of weeks ago in Dubai, should be encouraged by the composure and level she displayed throughout a highly emotional match. After the contest ended abruptly, Eala made sure to praise Gauff and call her one of her role models on tour.
“I want to say thank you to all the incredible women who have paved the way and who have advocated for themselves and for other women. Among them is Coco. So thank you Coco for being an amazing competitor and amazing role model. I really hope everything is well and you will recover soon.”
The pair have been close acquaintances off the court and have even played doubles together. In fact, they made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open in Rome last year. Now, both players shift their focus moving forward. For Gauff, the priority will be identifying the injury and addressing it before the Miami Open begins. Meanwhile, Eala continues her impressive debut run at Indian Wells, where she will face Linda Noskova in the fourth round.
