The time has come for the WTA Tour to grind to a halt, and for a number of players, that represents a chance to take the next step.

A number of players curtailed their 2025 seasons early, with Paula Badosa, Elina Svitolina and Daria Kasatkina the highest-profile players to take a break.

All of those players will be back in 2026, however, for others, the time has come to call time on their careers, with an American player deciding the time is right to stop playing.

The WTA Tour is a gruelling schedule and it’s little surprise that it’s starting to make an impact on players, especially those lower down the ranks who aren’t earning the mega bucks on a weekly basis.

Lauren Davis retires from professional tennis

Davis is only 32-years-old but has managed to maintain a career as a professional for 14 years, and as a teenager, she was a highly-rated prospect.

The Ohio-native managed to win over $5 million during her career on the WTA Tour and collected two career titles at the Auckland Open in 2017 and in Hobart in 2023.

Davis has beaten Madison Keys during her career, too. That came at the 2013 Miami Open when she knocked out the American in the second round after replacing an injured Victoria Azarenka in the tournament.

The Grand Slams never proved overly fruitful for Davis, and she never managed to make it beyond a third round, making that stage at three of the four majors, with the second round her best on the clay at the French Open.

Davis predicted bright future for Coco Gauff

After stunning defending champion Angelique Kerber at Wimbledon in 2019, the American was quizzed on Gauff.

Just a teenager at the time, Gauff had progressed through two rounds at the tournament, and Davis had seen the talent first-hand during a practice session.

She said in her press conference: “Yeah, she’s incredible.

“I hit with her when she just turned 14, I think it was last year. I told my coach, This girl is amazing.

“She hits the ball like Venus, same pace and everything. But, like, most importantly, I would talk to her over the changeovers, get to know her a little bit. She’s a really, really good girl.

“I support her all the way for sure.”
