Marketa Vondrousova completes improbable Wimbledon championship

Marketa Vondrousova became the first unseeded woman to win at Wimbledon, defeating Ons Jabeur in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 in the finals on Saturday.

Voundrousova is the third unseeded player to win the tournament and the first since Goran Ivanisevic in 2001. Boris Becker won the men's title as an unseeded player in 1985.

She won the match after chasing down a return by Jabeur and hitting the ball to the corner opposite Jabeur.

Vondrousova couldn't play at Wimbledon last year after having surgery on her wrist. After the match, she discussed how she watched the tournament last year with a cast on her arm.

Yahoo! Sports notes she's the lowest-ranked woman to win at Wimbledon, entering the tournament 42nd.

While stunning, Vondrousova's win fits the parity trend in women's tennis since Serena Williams won her final Grand Slam in 2017.

Vondrousova is the sixth's woman to win Wimbledon in the last six tournaments. She's also the second winner in a row who was an extreme longshot entering the tournament.

Before this year's tournament, Vondrousova was 1-4 all-time at Wimbledon. She won seven times in the past two weeks, the last capping a most improbable run.
