Andre Agassi to replace John McEnroe as Laver Cup captain
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Eight-time Grand Slam winner Andre Agassi is replacing John McEnroe as the captain of Team World at the Laver Cup.

Agassi's term, announced Wednesday, will begin in 2025 when the Laver Cup is played in San Francisco. At the event, six of the best male players from Europe compete against six men from the rest of the world in a three-day competition.

McEnroe has served as captain since the first Laver Cup, held in 2017 in Prague. He will lead Team World this September against captain Bjorn Borg and Team Europe in Berlin.

Borg, a nemesis of McEnroe in their playing days, also is making his final appearance as captain. His replacement is set to be named soon.

A former World No. 1, Agassi also has 60 ATP Tour titles and an Olympic gold medal won in 1996 to his credit.

"I am truly honored to accept the invitation to become the Laver Cup Team World Captain," said Agassi, 54, who will be formally introduced as captain at the conclusion of the 2024 event.

"The competitive level of Laver Cup is off the charts and it's easy to see why," Agassi continued. "You're there with the team, your peers, guys you respect, and everybody has a responsibility. For me the key will be understanding and managing the players' needs throughout the year and really getting to know them so that I can select the matchups to give us the best chance to get wins on the board and bring home the Laver Cup.

"I hope I can build the rapport, respect and trust with the players as John has done and I can't wait to take on this role. It's not one I'm taking lightly."

McEnroe, 65, said he agreed with the choice for his successor.

"The Laver Cup is very special to me, a truly incredible competition that I love being a part of," McEnroe said. "I will be rooting for him and Team World and will support him however I can."
