Russian star Andrey Rublev is set to face American Tristan Boyer in the second round of the US Open after a confident first-round victory. But it isn’t just his tennis that has his fans excited—it’s his off-court chemistry with his new coach, retired Russian great Marat Safin.
Since teaming up, Rublev and Safin have brought a sense of fun and freedom to training sessions, something fans have noticed and celebrated. One viral video from the practice courts this week captured Rublev, Safin, and Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik in a light-hearted moment.
The clip shows the trio aiming repeated tennis ball smashes at the glass windows surrounding the court, drawing laughter from spectators. Despite dozens of attempts, none of them managed to break through. At one point, Safin even cracked open a fresh can of balls after the group exhausted those already on court.

Just when the players seemed ready to give up, fellow Russian Karen Khachanov walked in and supplied even more balls, prolonging the fun and entertaining the crowd further.

While the playful stunt was never going to succeed, the joy and camaraderie on display left fans happy with Rublev’s refreshed mindset. With Safin’s flamboyant personality guiding him, and a cheerful approach to training, Rublev appears to be striking the right balance as he aims for a deep run in New York. His second round match will be one of the first in the day sessions and will be played on the grandstand arena.
