Former world No. 1 Andy Murray underwent multiple hip surgeries in recent years, dealt with a pelvic injury last fall, tested positive for COVID-19 ahead of the 2021 Australian Open and was sidelined earlier this spring because of what he called a "freak" groin setback.
The 34-year-old was back in action Tuesday at the cinch Championships, where he defeated Benoit Paire 6-3, 6-2 as he prepares to compete at Wimbledon.

The two-time Wimbledon champion worked to hold tears back while speaking after the victory:

"I love playing tennis," he said before choking up and then apologizing in front of an adoring audience. "Obviously, competing is why you put in all the hard work. The last few years I’ve not gotten to do it as much as I would like. So, it's great that I’m out here and able to compete again."
He was later able to joke about wanting a break between matches:
"Am I playing tomorrow?"

Per Reuters (h/t ESPN), Murray added: "The body is old, but I did quite well today in terms of movement and stuff, considering it was my first [singles] match on grass in three years."
Murray will face top seed Matteo Berrettini in the tournament's second round. The three-time Grand Slam champion has been awarded a wild card for the Wimbledon Championships that open June 28.
