Andy Murray was recognized this Monday at the Queen’s Club Championships, with the renaming of their center court—now officially the Andy Murray Arena. During the unveiling of the center court, Murray had a conversation with BBC, where he spoke about his younger compatriot Jack Draper.
Draper’s rise in tennis has been spectacular. At the Indian Wells this year, Draper stunned two top 5 players- World No. 4 Taylor Fritz in the fourth round, and World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals to reach his first ATP 1000 final. He was crowned champion at Tennis Paradise after defeating Holger Rune in straight sets, and cracked into the top 10 ATP rankings for the first time. Murray said:
I am convinced that he will be among the players called to win Grand Slam titles in the next five or ten years. He is in a growth process and is doing it wonderfully. He has the potential to achieve great success.
The 23-year-old has reached two more finals this year—at the Qatar Open, where he was defeated by Andrey Rublev, and the Madrid Open, where he was defeated by Casper Ruud. Following reaching his first clay court semifinal at the Madrid Open, Draper reached the World No. 5 rank on 5 May 2025, becoming just the fourth British man to reach the top 5 in the rankings.
With three titles now under his belt, each on a different surface, Draper has proved himself as a formidable opponent on every surface. Aged 23 years and 121 days, by reaching the Madrid Open final, Draper became the youngest man representing Great Britain in the Open Era to reach the finals on clay, grass, and hardcourt.
Murray has tipped Draper to be a potential Grand Slam champion in the near future. Draper’s best run in a Grand Slam was at the 2024 US Open semifinals, where he lost to eventual champion World No. 1 Jannik Sinner.
On BBC Radio 5 Live, former British tennis star Andrew Castle remarked that Jack Draper can upset two-time defending champion World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz at Wimbledon this summer. Though Draper was knocked out by Alexander Bublik in the fourth round at Roland-Garros, he made up another place in the ATP rankings, which leaves him at a career-high World No. 4.
He's had a great year. Jack can win Wimbledon this year. You can't possibly get to four in the world and not consider yourself, in front of home fans, a possibility. Don't forget he beat Alcaraz at Queen's last year. Of course Carlos had been in Ibiza for four days partying like a wild animal, but so what? He's beaten him and he's capable of winning Wimbledon, for sure.
Draper won his first ATP title on grass at the Stuttgart Open last year, where he defeated Matteo Berrettini. The Brit defeated Alcaraz in straight sets last year at the Queen’s Club Championships in the Round of 16, before he fell short to Tommy Paul in the quarterfinals.
Though he has never been past the second round at Wimbledon, Draper will be kicking off his grass season this year at Queen’s with a newfound momentum and will be a heavy favorite throughout the grass season.
He will have some top contenders to fight such as Jannik Sinner who has reached all the finals of the tournaments he has played in this season and Alcaraz who just defended his Roland Garros title.
