With the start of the Australian Open main draw just around the corner, fans have already been treated to plenty of action in Melbourne.
Jannik Sinner got past Felix Auger-Aliassime, while Carlos Alcaraz saw off Alex de Minaur in exhibition matches played on Rod Laver Arena.
And amateur Jordan Smith earned a $1 million prize after winning the One Point Slam.
Tennis legend Andy Roddick especially enjoyed watching the One Point Slam and felt it was a win for the tournament overall.
Andy Roddick discussed his take on the event during a recent episode of ‘Served with Andy Roddick’.
“That was awesome,” said Roddick.
“Jordan Smith, props.
“What a win! Easy entertainment, not a big ask of the players, you can put in celebrities. The star power doesn’t have to just come from the top players.”
The 2003 US Open winner appreciated how the format allowed viewers to see familiar faces like Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev in a more laid-back setting ahead of a high-stakes event.
He also believes tennis could benefit by adopting concepts that are already working well in other sports.
“All-Star weekend is great,” he said. “We should probably pick and steal ideas from things that people enjoy about it already.”
“I was talking to Kim [Clijsters] about it on a text yesterday,” he said.
“I was like, you would be fine, because she can strike the ball straight out of a nap.
“No problem, wake up, go, hit the centre of the racket.
“I’d be going full push chipper, just to the middle of the court.
“I’d be betting on someone else’s chokey-choke, that’s what I’d be doing. I’d be shoving.”
He then revealed whether he would prefer to serve or return.
“Depends. Depends on who I’m playing,” said Roddick.
Just days before the Australian Open main draw begins, a new event on Rod Laver Arena caught fans’ attention: The One Point Slam.
The event, featuring eight ATP players, eight WTA stars and eight club amateurs, offered a unique twist. And to make things even more interesting, organisers put up a $1 million prize for the winner.
It was Australian amateur Jordan Smith who walked away with the cash prize after defeating Joanna Garland in a tightly contested final.
Coco Gauff and Alexander Zverev were the most high-profile names to exit early, bowing out in their opening matches. Pre-tournament favourites Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz also didn’t make deep runs, both exiting in the third round.
Amanda Anisimova and Iga Swiatek made it as far as the quarterfinals but couldn’t advance further.
