Annabel Croft offered a balanced but candid assessment of the Battle of the Sexes match between Aryna Sabalenka and Nick Kyrgios.
The former British number one praised the entertainment value but admitted the contest did not quite reach the competitive level some expected.
Croft, who has closely followed both players’ careers, analyzed how Kyrgios approached the event and how Sabalenka handled the challenge.
The match may have drawn global attention, but Croft’s insight provided a more grounded perspective on what unfolded on court.
Croft said Kyrgios’ approach shaped the tone of the match, describing how his variety and touch made it difficult for Sabalenka to find rhythm. She noted that his skill set and control dictated much of the play.
“I think it didn’t quite live up to what I thought it might be,” Croft told BBC Sport. “That was a lot to do with how he played the game. He did what he does on the tour generally.
“He is a very awkward customer for anyone. Slice, choppy forehands, slow balling, awkwardness. The ball was moving a lot, particularly on his serve.
“The way it moved in the air, you could see she was returning way outside the court. He was very smart in how he played. You felt like at any point he could dip into other gears.”
Her analysis underlined Kyrgios’ intelligence and the deceptive nature of his game. By mixing pace, spin, and placement, he prevented Sabalenka from building momentum.
Croft suggested that his ability to manage tempo and disguise intent made him a challenging opponent even in an exhibition setting.
Croft also made clear that the match did not fairly reflect Sabalenka’s full ability. She said the format and Kyrgios’ playing style limited opportunities for the world number two to showcase her strengths.
Despite the scoreline, Croft viewed Sabalenka’s effort as composed and admirable.
“I didn’t feel like it showcased her enough of what we know she is capable of,” Croft added. “Perhaps it was disappointing for how it could have showcased her, but it had its moments.
“She certainly didn’t embarrass herself in any way. I didn’t expect her to win that match.”
Croft reminded viewers that the exhibition was not a measure of competitive balance but a chance to bring two strong personalities together on court.
While Kyrgios controlled much of the action, she praised Sabalenka for embracing the challenge and competing with spirit throughout the evening.
