Another day, another win: Jannik Sinner recovers in style after second-set trouble and books China Open semifinal spot
Mike Frey-Imagn Images

Jannik Sinner claims another victory at the China Open and has now secured his place in the semifinals after comfortably defeating Fabian Marozsan 6-1, 7-5. The World No. 2 continues his excellent season and remains a player who is practically unbeatable for the majority of the Tour.

Sinner continues to extend his remarkable 2025 record after achieving 40 victories this season—including 21 wins in his last 23 appearances. Sinner's incredible 2025 continues, with the Italian reaching at least the semifinals in 7 of the 8 tournaments he has played this season and recording 9 consecutive semifinals on hardcourts.

Sinner recovers from second set scare to defeat Marozsan

The match began with Marozsan (No. 57) easily winning his first service game to love, but that was one of the few things the Hungarian was able to showcase in the first set. Sinner responded with another great service game to hold at 1-1 and then completely took over the match—securing three consecutive breaks and practically giving his opponent no chances on his serve.

Sinner won 71% of his service points and 63% of his return points throughout the set. He took the next six games in a row without Marozsan even managing to reach deuce in any of them. The Hungarian was out of rhythm, landing only 53% of his first serves and winning just 40% of those (in addition to a poor 33% on second serve).

In the second set, however, things tightened up as Marozsan found his serving rhythm. The Hungarian managed to keep pace with a determined Sinner who was giving few opportunities on his serve, keeping everything level and with no break points for either player until 4-4. At that moment, Marozsán got the break and had the chance to serve for the second set at 5-4. However, Sinner reacted instantly, winning 12 of the next 13 points and ultimately claiming the victory in straight sets 6-1, 7-5.

Sinner looks ahead to semifinal clash with De Minaur

Sinner secured his spot in the semifinals without major setbacks and in another display of great tennis. He reacted quickly to being broken in the second set and avoided unnecessary complications, sealing the victory in one hour and 21 minutes. "I feel like I started very well in the first set. We both played well in the 2nd set," commented the 4-time Grand Slam champion.

"He’s someone whose peak is very high, which I knew before the match. When he was serving for the set he made a couple unforced errors which helped me to come back and win in two. It’s psychological of course too. It’s also how you arrive to this moment. I tried to fight. I had some tough service game holds on 0-30 a couple times. Happy how I fought today. Let’s see what’s coming in the next round."

"Well of course. This is what I practice for. Confidence is also very important in our game. Let’s see how I’m gonna finish," added the Italian. "Considering the amount of tournaments I’ve played and winning so many matches, it’s great for me. It’s great for our team. We try to build on that. Let’s see. Today I was very aggressive from the back of the court. Trying to go a bit more to the net, which worked very well. Change up sometimes was very difficult today because we were playing very very fast. Difficult to change pace. Generally very happy about today’s performance. Let’s see what’s coming. Great to be in the semis."

The Italian's next challenge will be against World No. 8 Alex de Minaur, who advanced almost without breaking a sweat following the retirement of Jakub Mensik in the quarterfinals while the Australian was leading 4-1. The Australian will surely not be pleased about facing Sinner again, as the Italian overwhelmingly dominates their head-to-head record 10-0 (23-1 in sets), with their last meeting being at the Australian Open earlier this season.
