The eighth day of the main draw at 2024 Indian Wells witnessed a major upset as women’s second seed Aryna Sabalenka bowed out of the tournament after losing to America’s Emma Navarro in the fourth round. In the men’s event, the American Dream at 2024 Indian Wells took a hit as Taylor Fritz was ousted after a defeat at the hands of Holger Rune .
Meanwhile, Coco Gauff and Tommy Paul saved the day as they won their respective fourth-round matches. The other top seeds like Maria Sakkari and Casper Ruud also advanced to the quarterfinals. While Ruud beat Gael Monfils, Sakkari edged past Diane Parry.
The women’s event witnessed another upset when Daria Kasatkina was ousted from the Masters tournament by Chinese youngster Yuan Yue. The Russian tennis star was taken down in three sets. Despite winning the first set, Kasatkina lost the match 6-4, 4-6, 3-6.
Belarusian tennis ace Aryna Sabalenka was shocked by American Emma Navarro in her fourth-round match. This is the second early exit in a row for Sabalenka who won the Grand Slam title in Australia.
The two-time Grand Slam champion was taken to the cleaners in the opening set as Navarro claimed it 6-3. Sabalenka staged a comeback in the second set and raced to a 6-3 win. In the decider, Navarro upped her game as she won it 6-2 and ended Sabalenka’s campaign at 2024 Indian Wells.
American top-seed Taylor Fritz could not save himself against Danish tennis ace Holger Rune as the 26-year-old was defeated in three sets. Despite taking the first 6-2, Fritz lost the match as Rune staged a terrific comeback.
The Dane star fought hard in the second set. Despite Fritz maintaining a lead from the start of the second set, Rune fought back to win the set in the tiebreaker. In the third set, the 20-year-old played some impressive shots including a thunderous forehand and a beautiful drop shot. Eventually, Rune won the match 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3.
While Aryna Sabalenka could not seal a spot in the quarterfinal, Coco Gauff did not make any errors and comprehensively beat her opponent in the fourth round. The reigning US Open champion beat Elise Mertens in straight sets of 6-0, 6-2 in 66 minutes.
Meanwhile, three-time Australian Open finalist Daniil Medvedev also comprehensively beat his opponent in straight sets. Medvedev beat Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-4 in 76 minutes. The Russian ace did not have to break much sweat and now he will meet Holger Rune in the quarterfinal.
American ATP star Tommy Paul has kept himself in the hunt at the Masters tournament as the 26-year-old sealed a spot in the quarterfinal. Paul was tasked to bat lucky loser Luca Nardi who ousted Novak Djokovic in the third round.
While it might have been a tricky challenge, Paul took down the Italian youngster in straight sets. The American star beat Nardi 6-4, 6-3, and set himself a clash with Casper Ruud. The Norwegian beat Frenchman Gael Monfils 3-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4.
