'At my lowest after I was No. 1,' Andre Agassi runs through his past to believe Nick Kyrgios must fight his ‘demons’ to make the comeback we’re all waiting for

Nick Kyrgios is hands-down one of the most controversial and misunderstood figures in modern-day tennis.

The Australian player is pretty infamous for speaking his heart out and is considered to be ‘bitter’ by many fellow tennis players as well.

This might be one of the reasons why he has had several beefs with other players throughout his career. However, the fact that the Australian is currently going through a rough phase in his career is a bit of a problem because, for the first time in a while, he does not have the numbers and performance to justify his words.

Tennis legend Andre Agassi had been in a similar situation at a particular point in his career. He was not a controversial figure by any means, but being the World No. 1 and then dropping down to rank 141 just two years later was a pretty massive upset for the American. His return to the top of the rankings in 1999 was thus equally satisfying.

However, to do that, he had to rebuild himself in many ways. In a recent interview, he suggested that Nick Kyrgios needs to do just that.

What I think he can still do with his game from a talent perspective, I think that’s pretty clear. “If I [got to] spend time with him [Kyrgios] … for me the most important thing is to understand who somebody is, where somebody’s at, and meeting him where that is. Andre Agassi said (H/T: The Age)

The 8-time Grand Slam title winner appreciated the fact that Nick Kyrgios is transparent about his situation and honest with himself because that is important for a player to redeem himself.

Because regardless what demons one fights with, regardless how real they are or not, if you think they’re real, they exist, so you have to deal with them. He added.

Nick Kyrgios’s career has been plagued by injuries lately

Nick Kyrgios had a dream run in 2022, and it seemed like he was finally making full use of his potential.

The Aussie made it to the final of Wimbledon, where he lost to Novak Djokovic after a tough battle, and then proceeded to lose to Karen Khachanov in the quarterfinal of the US Open that year.

However, he was able to play a total of only four matches after that. He missed the first part of 2023 due to knee surgery. He made a short comeback at Stuttgart but a wrist issue forced him to sit out the entire season.

He is not featuring in the 2024 Australian Open for the same reason and is a part of Eurosport’s commentary team.

The Aussie seems confused about a potential date for his return. He recently announced that he will not play in the Indian Wells and the Miami Open as well.
