The ATP Basel 2025 edition has seen its fair share of upsets and as a result the tournament has become even more unpredictable and exicting. As ever, we preview and predict both the semifinal matches for you.
Head-to-head – Fokina 2-1 Humbert
Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is the highest seed remaining in the draw. The Spaniard, who is seeded eighth this week, reached the semifinals courtesy of a third retirement of the day with Casper Ruud ending his match after the first set.
Ugo Humbert entered this week after a disappointing loss in the final of the Stockholm Open. The Frenchman hasn’t let that bother him, though, as he has blasted through the draw to reach the semifinals. En route, Humbert dominated the top seed Taylor Fritz in straight sets. Safe to say, Humbert enjoys the indoor hard court conditions.
Davidovich Fokina leads the head to head 2-1 but they last met in Marseille last year which went the way of Humbert. Both players have played great tennis this week but Humbert carries a lot of momentum from last week and continuing this week. The Frenchman should be able to utilise his serve and net game well to nab the victory.
Prediction: Humbert in 3
Head-to-head – First Meeting
Joao Fonseca is just 19 years old, but the Brazilian is already one of the most exciting players on tour for more than a year. He won his first title this year, and this week in Basel may provide him an opportunity to add to the tally. Apart from the first round win, Fonseca has enjoyed back to back walkovers from his opponents.
Jaume Munar has had decent form ever since Winston-Salem. The Spaniard is not known to play his best tennis on the hard courts, but his recent results seems to have changed that narrative. He has looked pretty solid from the baseline throughout this week.
Expect this match to have a lot of long rallies but it just seems like Fonseca will be the aggressor–and on the indoor courts of Basel, that should be the deciding factor.
Prediction: Fonseca in 3
