With just four men left in contention at ATP Beijing, it promises to be an entertaining day of tennis in the Chinese capital. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the slate, but who will reach the final?
Head-to-head: Tien 1-0 Medvedev
Daniil Medvedev’s second top-three win of the season came against the same opponent. Medvedev’s assured 6-3 6-3 win over Alexander Zverev was his 14th victory in 21 matches against the German. The win takes him to just his fourth semifinal of a very difficult season, which hasn’t yielded any titles. Learner Tien, for his part, earned his third top 25 win in this tournament after Lorenzo Musetti retired hurt in the deciding set of their entertaining quarterfinal.
Medvedev is getting his confidence back. That could stem from his new partnership with coaches Thomas Johannson and Rohan Goetzke. It’s too early to call this a full resurgence, but this semifinal run is an encouraging step in the right direction for the former-world #1. He’s also in much better shape physically and mentally to tap into his best tennis, which he will need to against an in-form Tien.
Prediction: Medvedev in 3
Head-to-head: Sinner 10-0 De Minaur
Jannik Sinner is still mathematically in with a shout of finishing the season as world #1. He must hope for a huge slice of good fortune, which is unlikely to come this week, as Carlos Alcaraz made it to the final in Tokyo. But Sinner is doing his bit. He is winning matches as expected and posted his 12th win in 13 matches in Beijing after another straight sets clinic. His 6-1 7-5 quarterfinal win over Fabian Marozsan was his 40th tour-level victory of the season. And all that having missed three months of competition earlier this season. Only a handful of players have eclipsed the Italian’s tally.
Alex de Minaur has looked in good form this week. He registered a stunning win over home player Bu Yunchaokete in the opening round, losing just four games. After escaping with a hard-fought second-round win against Arthur Rinderknech, de Minaur played for only five games when his quarterfinal opponent, Jakub Mensik, retired with an injury. This will be de Minaur’s first semifinal since he won the Citi Open at the end of July.
The head-to-head is as one-sided as it can get. Sinner has won all 10 meetings and has only dropped one set to the Australian, which was way back in 2020. Every match between them feels less like a rivalry. The sheer weight of Sinner’s shot overwhelms de Minaur, and there’s not much that will likely change in their latest meeting.
Prediction: Sinner in 2
