Carlos Alcaraz is one win away from securing the year-end world #1 ranking at the ATP Finals. Remarkably, all four men in the Jimmy Connors group are in contention to qualify for the semifinals, but only two spots are available. Who will advance?
Head-to-head: Fritz 5-5 De Minaur
Taylor Fritz pushed Carlos Alcaraz to the limit in the second group stage match, and in the end, he was left to rue missed chances. Fritz played some exceptional tennis to win the first set in a tiebreaker. In his post-match assessment, he felt that the window of opportunity to close out the match was in the second set. He had two break points at 2-all, which he let slip and Alcaraz eventually completed a comeback victory. It’s still quite commendable that he played at a high level despite having knee tendinitis. He’ll need to stay sharp and aggressive to limit a lot of movement which may be easier said than done against Alex de Minaur who is one of the quickest players on tour who will happily extend the rallies and wear down Fritz.
De Minaur can still qualify even with two defeats, but he was extremely disappointed after his loss to Musetti. That defeat triggered a moment of self-evaluation over his poor record against the top 10. While he has a modest record against the best players, he has beaten Fritz more times than against any other opponent in the top 10. If there is to be a response from the Australian, this might be his favorite matchup to bounce back.
Head-to-head: Alcaraz 7-1 Musetti
The night session match promises to be a blockbuster. Alcaraz might be the overwhelming favorite on paper, but he faces a crowd favourite in Lorenzo Musetti, who is off the mark in this tournament. Musetti was cheered every step of the way in his second match and upset Alex De Minaur. He was on the brink of elimination, but found a way to break the Australian who served for the match and settled a thrilling match 7-5 in the third after nearly three hours.
Whether Musetti can carry that momentum into his next match is doubtful. Alcaraz has steadily improved with each match and showed how dynamic and joyful his tennis can be when he’s in full flow. Although he did drop a set to Fritz, Alcaraz has looked comfortable in these testing conditions, mixing aggression and regulation in his shots. Playing on home turf might lift Musetti, but Alcaraz’s pace and weight of shot should prove too much. And a win will ensure he finishes the season as the world #1.
Prediction: Alcaraz in 2
