Day 3 of the ATP Grand Prix Hassan II event in Marrakech, Morocco features former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini trying to play himself back into form after injury as well as former top ten player Fabio Fognini in action.

ATP Marrakech Day 3 Predictions

Sumit Nagal vs Lorenzo Sonego

Head-to-head: Sonego 1-0After looking promising just a few seasons ago, Sonego’s career has gone somewhat backwards. Now ranked outside of the world’s Top 60, the Italian has severely struggled, so much so that you have to go back to May last year for the last time he won three matches in a row. Thankfully for him, Nagal is one of the players around where Sonego will control his own destiny. The Indian is solid but there’s a reason he’s only won eight of 28 matches against top 100 players, the lack of weapons. As bad as Sonego has been the past 10 or so months, he should win this one.
Prediction: Sonego in 2

Pavel Kotov vs Fabio Cobolli

Head-to-head: Cobolli 1-0

Cobolli’s fast start to 2024 has somewhat gone under the radar, from qualifying for the Australian Open to making the third round and then seven wins on the tour up until this encounter, the 21 year old is only getting better and better. Despite possessing a big game and only being ranked five places lower in the world rankings, the Russian had to break a losing streak of four matches in a row in the first round here, despite against a wildcard ranked outside the world’s top 650. Cobolli has the form and expect him to consider his good hard court play on the clay here.
Prediction: Cobolli in 2

Matteo Berrettini vs Jaume Munar

Head-to-head: First meeting

Now ranked outside the world’s Top 130, it’s hard to know what to expect from the former Wimbledon finalist. Just when his career was going amazingly well with slam semis, a final and other big runs in smaller events, injury hit. Now on a comeback trail, it’s admittedly not horrific as evident with destroying Shevchenko in the first round and a final showing at the challenger in Phoenix just a few weeks ago. But whilst not bad, it’s too inconsistent with bad performances showing up out of nowhere here and there. With Munar you know what you’re going to get on the clay, someone running around retrieving everything until you miss. Berrettini’s huge serve and game as long as he doesn’t have a shocker should be enough.
Prediction: Berrettini in 3

Laslo Diere vs Fabio Fognini

Head-to-head: Djere 2-1

A long time ago Fabio Fognini was one of the best claycourters in the world. Fast forward to 2024 and it’s anything but with the former top 10 player finding himself mosty on the challenger tour with his level being far below what it used to be. It’s not exactly an ideal second round match here either because Djere simply does everything better. It’s hard to see Fognini having the movement to put up with Djere from the baseline, especially with the Serb’s backhand and to go alongside that, it’s hard to see the Italian hitting through the 28 year old regularly enough to get the win either. Just like their two clay court meetings in the past, there’s no doubt Djere is the favorite.
Prediction: Djere in 2
