ATP Race Update: Ben Shelton and Arthur Fils shoot up order after title triumphs as Djokovic loses ground on rivals

After the culmination of the Barcelona Open and Munich Open, the ATP Race to Turn has heated up. New names have risen up the order with an intention to qualify for the ATP Finals in November, while others slip up at a costly time, squandering the chance to earn more valuable points in these ATP 500 tournaments ahead of the lucrative Madrid Open.

Sinner remains on top, Shelton on the rise

Jannik Sinner was not competing in either Barcelona or Munich, bathing in the glory of his Monte-Carlo Masters triumph for a while longer before looking to become the first player to win five consecutive Masters 1000 titles at the Madrid Open. He remains in the lead and will have a chance to extend the gap when traversing to the Spanish capital.

It comes as no surprise that Carlos Alcaraz is also in the top two. He had spent most of the year on top thanks to that Australian Open title but has since been surpassed by a rampant Sinner. He had the chance to move back ahead, but his Barcelona Open campaign was cut short due to injury. This damaging blow will keep him in second for the time being.

Fortunately, there is no concern from behind. Over 1,300 points off the pace is Alexander Zverev, who is even further behind Sinner. Another semi-final defeat sees the German cement his position in third with another decent haul of points. Daniil Medvedev stays on the same tally he previously had in fourth while Munich champion Ben Shelton boosts his chances of making it to Turin for a second year in a row. The 500 points earned could come in key at the end of the year. For now, he jumps up three places to fifth.

Fils in the mix after title as Djokovic falls away

Despite not playing in the Australian swing, Arthur Fils has managed to propel himself into sixth in the ATP Live Rankings. An incredible achievement showcasing how inform he currently is. The Frenchman's latest heroics came in the Barcelona Open. It was a second final since coming back from injury, and this time he left with the trophy. It is a first title since 2024 and puts him firmly in contention for a debut in the ATP Finals.

That is if he can continue this form, with a lot of tennis still to be played. There will be question marks surrounding Novak Djokovic on if he will play or even earn enough points to qualify. He has not competed in the ATP Finals since 2023, when he won it. The last two years he qualified but opted not to turn up. Sitting in seventh, he may not step onto the court until Roland Garros, opening up a golden opportunity for other players to overtake him.

Alex de Minaur completes the top eight. He was hoping for more progress in Barcelona, but an early exit restricted his movement. In fact, he has dropped two places as Shelton and Fils overtoook him. Felix Auger-Aliassime moves down to ninth with Flavio Cobolli's run to the Munich Open final continuing his upturn in form from a diabolical start to 2026. He is now in 10th thanks to an 11-place rise. Tomas Martin Etcheverry continues to impress on clay. He sits, on paper, in a very respectable 11th. However, a second round exit means he has lost ground to the competition having been ranked in ninth the previous time out.

Andrey Rublev benefited from a much-needed final run. Fils proved too good for him in the final, but the points earned boosts him to 14th from 22nd. Taylor Fritz and Lorenzo Musetti have work to do if they are going to return to Turin. The American is having injury troubles which has halted his progress. The same could have been said for Musetti who is still trying to get his rhythm back. Currently languishing in 23rd and 24th, they need to find their best tennis as soon as possible if they are going to mount a challenge.
