The remaining ATP Shanghai opening round matches will be played on Thursday. Reilly Opelka might rate his chances of a good run in the lively conditions because of his massive serve. The American’s match is one of four predicted here. We at LWOT predict the other action, including Aleksandar Kovacevic vs Juncheng Shang and Bu Yunchaokete vs Juan Manuel Cerundolo, in separate articles.
Head-to-head: First meeting
Both players started the Asian swing impressively at the Hangzhou Open. Wu defeated Daniil Medvedev in his run to the semifinal, while Svrcina beat Matteo Berrettini on his way to the quarterfinal. Svrcina has already played two qualifying matches in Shanghai, winning both in straight sets. Although the Czech impressed in those matches, I favor Wu more in Shanghai’s conditions and after his performances at the Hangzhou Open.
Prediction: Wu in 2
Head-to-head: First meeting
This will be Comesana’s first match of the Asian swing. Blanchet had not played since the Saint-Tropez Challenger in mid-September before winning two qualifiers in Shanghai. This could be a close battle. Comesana is most adept on clay, and not playing in any of the previous Asian tournaments might prove the difference in this matchup.
Prediction: Blanchet in 3
Head-to-head: Halys 1-0 McDonald
Expect plenty of lengthy rallies between two men who try to dominate from the baseline. Halys possesses slightly more power and will try to make that count against his American opponent. However, McDonald’s game is well-suited to redirecting the pace of others. Halys might be left rushed because McDonald’s game effectively absorbs his shots.
Prediction: McDonald in 3
Head-to-head: First meeting
Bonzi’s strong return and movement mean he could trouble Opelka. However, I think the conditions in Shanghai favor Opelka enough that he can push past the matchup challenge. Despite the Frenchman being a good returner, even he will probably struggle to get Opelka’s massive delivery back into play. That means Bonzi cannot afford any concentration lapses, something he is prone to.
Prediction: Opelka in 2
