With 28 matches on the slate, there should be plenty of entertaining tennis on day two at the Australian Open. As ever, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match, including Jessica Pegula vs Maya Joint, Naomi Osaka vs Caroline Garcia, Danielle Collins vs Daria Snigur, Mayar Sherif vs Dayana Yastremska, Coco Gauff vs Sofia Kenin, and Iga Swiatek vs Katerina Siniakova. But who will advance at Melbourne Park?
Petra Martic vs Jaqueline Cristian
Ilemona: Jaqueline Cristian is favoured to win against Petra Martic, with Martic’s recent struggles on hard courts putting her at a disadvantage. Martic made it into the main draw as a lucky loser after failing to win her final qualifying round match. Her experience at this level should boost her chances of capitalizing on the second chance afforded her here.
Prediction: Martic in 3
Andreas: Martic lost dreadfully in the final round of qualifying, but she’ll get some redemption opportunities here. Cristian had a career-best season in 2024 but notably went winless in all the Grand Slams. She should be motivated to win here with the higher ranking, but Martic has the experience and consistency of playing in 13 Australian Opens. Both players also have big serves; Cristian’s more consistent serve should be what pushes her to a close win.
Ilemona: Magda Linette has beaten Moyuka Uchijima in all their previous encounters. Linette’s higher ranking and strong form suggest she will come through in this match.
Prediction: Linette in 2
Andreas: Linette has struggled in recent matches, but will always have the confidence of being a former semifinalist in this event. Uchijima has continued to rise up the rankings as of late and should be the favorite by form, but it’s hard to look away from Linette’s experience and her three wins over the Japanese #2.
Prediction: Linette in 3
Ilemona: Victoria Azarenka’s experience and strong record at the Australian Open give her the clear advantage over Lucia Bronzetti, who has struggled in Grand Slam first rounds. Azarenka has reached the fourth round in 11 of her last 13 appearances at Melbourne Park, while Bronzetti’s form in majors has been inconsistent, with a 3-9 record in first-round matches. Expect Azarenka to dominate, maintaining her excellent start to the tournament.
Prediction: Azarenka in 2
Andreas: This feels like an extra important tournament for Azarenka, who is now 12 years off her second and final Australian Open title, and is longing for another big run at a Grand Slam. Bronzetti has a tricky topspin game that could throw off Azarenka’s power, but the Italian largely struggled toward the end of 2024. Azarenka should reach the second round easily.
Ilemona: Hailey Baptiste’s promising start to 2025, highlighted by her strong performances in Auckland, positions her as a dangerous opponent for Laura Siegemund. While Siegemund has the experience and a solid record at the Australian Open, Baptiste’s recent form and confidence could make her a tough challenge. Expect a competitive match, with Baptiste’s momentum possibly leading to an upset.
Prediction: Baptiste in 3
Andreas: Baptiste is an exciting player to watch, with a powerful serve and flat forehand that will contrast well with Siegemund’s finesse. The German played well at the United Cup, but Baptiste seems to be on the rise and should win this. The American just made her first ever WTA tour-level quarterfinal in Auckland.
Prediction: Baptiste in 3
