Australian Open Day 5 Men’s Predictions

Ben Shelton vs Dane Sweeny

Ilemona: Shelton’s first round was explosive, particularly on serve, where he consistently dictated early points. Sweeny competed well to advance, but returning Shelton’s left-handed delivery over an extended period is a major test.

Prediction: Shelton in 3

Steen: Sweeny, at 24, suddenly qualified for the Australian Open and upset Gael Monfils. Is a fairytale run loading for a player with a limited set of accomplishments in his career, or is Ben Shelton on a path to return to his best ever result at the Australian Open, where he reached the semifinals previously. Shelton has all the weapons and the talent and he enjoys a big stage. Sweeny may find himself outhit here.

Prediction: Shelton in 3

Zain: Dane Sweeny, backed by a home crowd, had enough to end Gael Monfils’ Australian Open campaign in the first round. Against Ben Shelton, who is not only the superior player but also coming off a confidence-boosting first-round win, his road is likely to end here.

Prediction: Shelton in 3

Jakub Mensik vs Rafael Jodar

Ilemona: Mensik looked authoritative in his opener, serving big and stepping inside the baseline with confidence. Jodar showed resilience in round one, but Mensik’s power profile should control the majority of exchanges.

Prediction: Mensik in 4

Steen: Jodar qualified for the AO and is on an insane run dating back to his time on the ATP Challenger Tour last season. Newly professional, at 19, he feels like a player with significant experience and talent despite being a new face on tour. Mensik, 20, just won the ATP Auckland title and is playing fantastic tennis. It’s a shame someone has to lose, Mensik needed five sets in is last match, and Jodar feels like one of the best players on tour at this moment.

Prediction: Jodar in 5

Zain: This is one of the most exciting matchups on paper, as Rafael Jodar is a really crafty baseliner playing with confidence, while Jakub Mensik comes in off a crucial five-set win. The Melbourne conditions should favor Mensik’s serve more than any of Jodar’s weapons.

Prediction: Mensik in 4

Luciano Darderi vs Sebastian Baez

Ilemona: Darderi impressed in round one by staying aggressive without leaking errors, especially off the forehand. Baez’s grinding style keeps him competitive and has translated well to hard courts this season, improving his ability to turn defense into offense.

Prediction: Baez in 5

Steen: Darderi is at a career high ranking, while Baez at 25, just reached the Auckland final and has made significant improvements in his hard-court game. On clay, Darderi might be favored, but right now Baez has a better rhythm on hard courts.

Prediction: Baez in 4

Zain: This match between two classic clay-court players should feature plenty of long rallies and very few points decided by serve. While Darderi enters having dropped fewer sets in the first round, Sebastian Baez’s recent renaissance on hard courts has been exciting to watch and should carry him through.

Prediction: Baez in 4

Lorenzo Musetti vs Lorenzo Sonego

Ilemona: Musetti’s opener showed improved patience, blending variety with timely aggression. Sonego came through a physical first round, and if rallies extend, Musetti’s ability to change rhythm may give him the edge.

Prediction: Musetti in 5

Steen: Musetti recently made ATP finals in Athens and Hong Kong and is now a top 5 player. The experienced Sonego has compiled a solid 15-8 record at the AO and reached the quarterfinals previously. Musetti doesn’t have a comparable record at the AO despite being the better player at the moment. This won’t be easy but Musetti’s form is enough to see him through.

Prediction: Musetti in 5

Zain: An all-Italian affair: Lorenzo Sonego brings more raw power, but Lorenzo Musetti can counter that with his variety, particularly if Sonego becomes inconsistent from the baseline. Despite some fitness concerns, Musetti should find a way through.

Prediction: Musetti in 4
