It all looked rosey for Bianca Andreescu after her opening match at the French Open in qualifying and with recent form on an upward curve. But in meeting Nao Hibino on Wednesday, she spurned a golden opportunity to head towards the main draw.
Andreescu, the former US Open champion is the biggest name in the women's qualifying field by some margin with the Canadian not getting into this tournament by virtue of not having any sort of protected ranking left.
She made her comeback last month in Rouen having not played since last October so while her ranking has risen since that point, she is not in the position yet where she can count on it being good enough to get into the main draw.
As a result, she had to go through the lottery of qualifying. She won her opening match with a double bagel and looked for all the will in the world that she would repeat that on Wednesday in regards to a rampant win.
She was 6-2, 6-3 up on the Japanese ace and had match points at 40-30 up but Hibino fought back to win the set 7-6. She then won the deciding set 6-4. Andreescu was also 5-2 up in the tie-breaker before losing five points in a row.
A real puzzling one for Andreescu who often makes it hard for herself in regards to not managing to pull herself out of easy straight set wins but this will be one she will lament.
With clay effectively over after this week, her attention will be Wimbledon. She heads onto the surface earlier than expected and her next tournament could be at a lower level in order to keep herself ticking over before it all begins.
She is outside of the main spots on the Entry List for Wimbledon released in the past day with a protected ranking giving her a high alternate spot. It is unsure as of yet with Entry Lists dropping all the time whether she will head to the UK or Germany to play on grass before Wimbledon.
