Bianca Andreescu will make her long-awaited tennis return in mid-April after she was granted a main draw wild card in a clay-court tournament in the lead-up to the French Open.
The former US Open champion hasn’t played a competitive match since reaching the quarterfinals of Tokyo last October. Injuries have impacted Andreescu’s participation in Tour-level events in the first quarter of 2025. She was forced to delay her comeback after undergoing emergency appendectomy in February and assured fans the procedure went smoothly and she was on the road to making a full recovery.
Andreescu recently updated the tennis community of her potential date of return during the European clay swing and was seen practicing in Monte Carlo in a post she shared on Instagram.
The 24-year-old’s first tournament of 2025 will be in Rouen, France, where she will partake in the WTA 250 event for the first time. She was due to play in qualifying there, but the tournament organizers confirmed that she has accepted a main draw wild card. Main draw action will begin on April 14th.

Andreescu will therefore test herself against some top names in the field, which include Elina Svitolina, and Grand Slam champions Sofia Kenin and Emma Raducanu.
Last season, Andreescu returned to competition after a nine-month injury layoff at the French Open and impressed in her run to the third round. She then played in three tournaments on grass, reaching her first WTA Tour final in two years at the Libema Open (lost to Liudmila Samsonova) before returning to Roland Garros to compete at the Olympics. Overall, she finished the year with an 11-10 win-loss record.
Andreescu is currently outside the Top 100 and hasn’t suffered significant ranking damage. She doesn’t defend any points until the French Open next month.
Two more wild cards for the event include Alize Cornet, who recently came out of retirement, and former World No. 4 Caroline Garcia. Sloane Stephens won this tournament last season, but the American won’t return to defend her title. However, last year’s runner-up, Magda Linette, will play.
