The 2025 BOSS Open in Stuttgart is one of two ATP tournaments to kick off the grass-court swing, along with the 2025 Libema Open. Australian Open runner-up Alexander Zverev, Ben Shelton, and US Open finalist Taylor Fritz are among those on the entry list. We at LWOT already reported on four players who withdrew from the Libema Open. This article highlights the man who removed themselves from the BOSS Open entry list.
Matteo Berrettini was one of two Grand Slam finalists to withdraw from the BOSS Open. The Italian sustained a right oblique injury during his Italian Open final loss to Casper Ruud that ruled him out of the French Open. Despite initially hoping to be ready for the start of the grass-court season, Berrettini has not recovered in time for the German ATP 250 tournament.
Nick Kyrgios was the other major finalist to withdraw from the event in Stuttgart. The 2022 Wimbledon runner-up will miss the entire grass-court season after suffering a setback in his recovery from injury. He returned this season after only playing one tournament in the previous two years due to wrist and knee injuries. However, he has struggled to get through matches due to consistent pain in his troublesome wrist.
Lorenzo Musetti will also not be playing at the BOSS Open. After a superb run to the French Open semifinals, the 23-year-old was forced to retire in the fourth set against the eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz with an upper left leg injury. His decision to rest and try to recover for the following week and Wimbledon is unsurprising and wise.
Frances Tiafoe was one of two Americans to withdraw from the BOSS Open. Unlike Berrettini, Kyrgios, and Musetti, this does not appear to be due to an injury. Last year’s US Open semifinalist reached the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros and probably wants to get additional rest before competing on grass.
Tommy Paul was the second American and final player to remove himself from the entry list. His reasoning is likely to be the same as Tiafoe’s. The 28-year-old got to the French Open quarterfinals, losing to Alcaraz, and may feel that more practice time on grass before playing matches is necessary.
Roman Safiullin took Berrettini’s place at the BOSS Open. The Russian is on a four-match losing streak and might welcome switching to a new surface. He faces a very challenging opening-round contest against the huge-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who reached the Wimbledon fourth round last year. Corentin Moutet replaced Kyrgios. He is a mercurial character and might bring the fieryness and controversy that Kyrgios is known for during matches.
Musetti’s decision to withdraw presented an opportunity for Yoshihito Nishioka. The Japanese star has not enjoyed much success on grass courts, but he is a gritty competitor who always fights to the end. Benjamin Bonzi will try to recapture the form that saw him upset 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic and Hubert Hurkacz at the Madrid Open after taking Frances Tiafoe’s spot. Jacob Fearnley, who reached the third round of this year’s French Open, was the other player to enter the BOSS Open.
