Can’t take the tennis out of WTA legend Billie Jean King as she pens down a note of congratulations after United Cup 2024

The United Cup comes to an end with Germany winning the trophy. Courtesy of a superb performance from Alexander Zverev, the Germans defeated Iga Swiatek‘s Poland. Zverev, even though playing his sixth match in three days, produced a superb performance first in the second round of singles and then in the mixed doubles.

Tennis fans and players have been all over the place on X (formerly known as Twitter), posting congratulatory messages for the German team. The American tennis legend Billie Jean King has also posted a congratulatory note for the winners of the United Cup. Besides, she also applauded Iga Swiatek for her good performances and for winning the Most Valuable Player award.

In the tweet, she wrote,

Congratulations to Team Germany, the United Cup champions! Cheers also to Team Poland on a terrific effort, and to Iga Swiatek for winning the Most Valuable Player Trophy.

The American Hall of Famer, currently 80, has been one of the finest tennis players the world has ever seen. With 129 career titles including 67 during the open era, King has created a legacy of her own. Even the growing age cannot divert her attention from the sport of tennis.

Germany wins their maiden United Cup

After the defending champions USA were eliminated in the group stages of the tournament, it was quite sure that the United Cup would find a new destination. Poland and Germany went head-to-head in the finals, in which Germany reigned as superior.

It was a superb comeback from Germany, especially Zverev. Early in the match, Swiatek had provided the early lead to Poland by defeating Angelique Kerber in straight sets.

However, in the second set of the match, Zverev saved three match points to clinch the second round defeating Hubert Hurkacz. Then came the decider in which Zverev partnered with Laura Siegemund to face up the Polish duo of Swiatek and Hurkacz.

The Germans kept their nerves and defeated Swiatek and Hurkacz 6-4, 5-7, 10-4 in the super tiebreaker. The winning shot too came from Zverev as his backhand volley clinched the third round and the title for Germany.
