The legacy of Carlos Alcaraz continues to grow, as the Spaniard added yet another accolade to his best following his nerve-wracking opening round win over Fabio Fognini in the opening round of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships

The defending champion took on the Italian in the first round, with Fognini likely playing at his final Wimbledon event. With many expecting the rising youngster to steamroll past the older veteran, Fognini turned back the clock and put on a classic display, pushing Alcaraz to five sets before the second seed escaped with a 7-5 6-7(5) 7-5 2-6 6-1 victory.

Alcaraz surpasses the Big 3 with impressive feat

The 22-year old has become a household name on the tennis circuit at such a young age. With 5 Grand Slam titles already to his name, Alcaraz has the potential to catch up to Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, who all each have at least 20 Grand Slam singles titles.

Another impressive feat of Alcaraz is his durability and grit, the Spaniard is almost undefeated in five set matches. Alcaraz's indefatigable spirit has put him at the top of the list of players with a winning record in the fifth set of five-set matches.

Compared to the Big Three, Alcaraz is 14-1 in the fifth set of five-set matches, when looking at the player's first 15 five set matches in their careers. Compatriot Nadal comes in second place with a 12-3 record, whereas Djokovic and Federer sit at 10-5 and 7-8 respectively. The sky is the limit for the El Palmar native, who takes on British qualifier Oliver Tarvet in the second round.
