Carlos Alcaraz delivered a strong comeback against Taylor Fritz in the ATP Finals, taking down the American with a commanding performance on Tuesday.

That victory moves Alcaraz to within one more win of confirming his spot in the semifinals, as well as putting him on the verge of securing world number one status heading into 2026.

“It’s difficult to explain my feelings right now. It’s something that I dreamed about since I started playing tennis, since I was five or six years old,” Alcaraz said after the match.

The Spanish player added: “It was a long road, but finally I’m here. And it’s an amazing feeling and something that I won’t ever forget.”

Alcaraz recovers from slow start to finish strong

The start wasn’t great for Alcaraz, as he dropped the opening set 7-6, but once he settled in, he took control. He broke Fritz twice to claim victory and maintain his unbeaten record against the American.

Already drawing praise earlier this week from Alex de Minaur after their first-round clash, Alcaraz appears fresh following his early exit at last week’s Paris Masters. He seems well-prepared for another deep run this time around.

What Carlos Alcaraz had to say about Taylor Fritz’s remarks

Fritz, who appeared to be struggling physically towards the end of the match, also praised Alcaraz’s performance after their clash.

Speaking in his press conference, Alcaraz responded: “I’m just trying to be in his mind before he hits (smiling).

“I don’t know. Just depends. We study a lot of the players in some matches or in the easy balls, where they’re going to hit more often. Sometimes he changes, the players change.

“But there is always a spot that he feels more comfortable hitting in a difficult moment or in a pressure moment. We study that, and we try to have that instinct to go to that side and pray that he’s going to be on that side.

“I think today I went to the correct side a couple of times. So, probably after all, he felt a little bit of pressure in that ball. That’s why he missed a little bit.”

Where Fritz needs to adjust his game

Fritz has little trouble handling most players on tour, but breaking through at a Grand Slam still seems just out of reach.

Issues around the net have often let him down against top-tier opponents like Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic.

That’s not to say there hasn’t been progress. In the past two years, he’s reached a Slam final and made the last four at Wimbledon this year.

But his recent loss to Alcaraz felt like another missed opportunity. It’s another mark in a growing list of defeats to the game’s elite.

At 28, there are clear areas for him to address in the off-season if he wants to finally push through and claim a major title next year.
