Right now, Carlos Alcaraz is the player everyone is chasing on the ATP Tour, and it feels like Jannik Sinner is the only one who can truly match him.

The gap between them and the rest of the field is noticeable. They’re not just ranked first and second in the world – they’ve also split all of the last eight Grand Slam titles between them.

On top of that, every one of the last three Grand Slam finals has featured both players, with each contest adding another chapter to their growing rivalry.

While plenty of people have enjoyed watching these two go head-to-head, some fans are beginning to wonder who might be next in line to challenge their hold on men’s tennis.

Joao Fonseca seems to be the most common answer people land on.

Fonseca is still just 19, so it might seem early to start throwing his name into the mix with tennis’ top players.

He’s shown he can handle pressure and already has two ATP titles under his belt, even though he’s only completed one full season. He looks ready for these types of discussions.

While Fonseca will have ambitions that stretch well beyond taking on Sinner and Alcaraz, getting into that conversation would be a good first step.

When asked about Fonseca, Alcaraz didn’t just praise him — he also shared some thoughts on what makes the young Brazilian such an exciting prospect.

Alcaraz said: “He is a very attractive player to watch, I love watching him, for the way he plays and for those powerful shots he has, with that beautiful and strong forehand. I am happy to start living experiences with him. At the beginning of this season, he has not been able to play the tournaments due to physical problems, and I advise him to take care of himself and recover, as he is very young.”

Roger Federer even compared himself to Fonseca, adding further weight to the growing buzz around this rising star.

What has Joao Fonseca said about Carlos Alcaraz?

Recently, Fonseca was asked about Alcaraz and spoke highly of the Spaniard while chatting with The Guardian.

Reflecting on their exhibition match in Miami, he shared: “I’d already practised with him two or three times, but it was great to see how he deals with the important points. I played a good match and almost got him in the tie-break.

“We talked a little about life and his career before the match. He’s a great guy, very humble, and an inspiration for the next generation.”

Looking ahead to 2026, it will be interesting to see if Fonseca can take that next step and establish himself not just within the top ten but alongside Alcaraz and Sinner at the very top of men’s tennis.
