Casper Ruud returns after controversial cancellation to setup Jannik Sinner clash at Rome Open
IPA

Casper Ruud is through to the Quarter-Finals of the 2025 Rome Open where he will face off against Jannik Sinner albeit this was in controversial circumstances prior to his match with Jaume Munar.

Ruud eased through 6-3, 6-4 to reach the Quarter-Finals for the fourth time in his last five appearances here and he reaches his 14th career Masters 1000 Quarter-Final.

He also continues his red hot form from Madrid where he was crowned champion but this is only after the organisers of the tournament came under fire last night.

While Peyton Stearns v Elina Svitolina and Tommy Paul v Alex de Minaur were still played, Ruud was the casualty. Due to the organisers not being sure whether it would be played after rain delayed the ties late afternoon yesterday, it saw Ruud and Munar having to sit there until around midnight before it was finally called off.

They have now had to return today and Ruud admirably wasn't fazed by it sealing the win. He said he was looking forward to the clash with Sinner.

“Match wins is one thing and of course to do it at the biggest tournament is another. I’ve had a little bit of both. But I would consider Alcaraz has had a better 4 or 5 years than me on this surface. He won Paris, he won Madrid a couple times. He won Monte Carlo. So by far way more big titles than myself. But it’s been a steady 5 years for me on this surface," he said post match.

"That’s why I keep saying I love coming back here. I kinda feel like I’m in my backyard. But that doesn’t mean I don’t lose matches on this surface. I lost already a couple this year. I’m on a good roll. But tomorrow will be one of the toughest matches of the year probably. I got beaten pretty bad by Jannik in Turin. This time we’re playing in Italy again but it’s another surface, another tournament. So let’s see. He’s been looking good since the first match. I’ve been feeling pretty good. It’s gonna be a good one tomorrow.”

But overall, it was called 'disgraceful' by Coco Vandeweghe on Tennis Channel as now Ruud has to return one day later to face a crowd favourite in Sinner who would've had nearly two days off by the time their match comes along. Also given it is the end of the tournament, he will quickly have to also play in the semi-finals. So a poor show all round for Ruud and one he has to navigate through.
