Coco Gauff has set an unwanted WTA record after accumulating over 400 double faults in back-to-back seasons.

2025 was a great year for Gauff, who won her second Grand Slam title at the French Open. She became the first American woman to win a clay-court Major since Serena Williams in 2015. Gauff helped the USA to win the United Cup for a second time on her debut. She also extended her perfect record in hard-court finals by winning the Wuhan Open in October.

Financially, the 21-year-old shattered the ceiling. She was named the highest-paid female athlete for the second year in a row.

But on the flip side, her serve remains her Achilles heel. No matter how refined the rest of her game is, Gauff’s serve faltered under pressure and shaped some of her matches. Gauff finished the season with a tour-leading number of double faults.

Gauff hits over 400 double faults in back-to-back seasons

The American hit a staggering 431 double faults in 2025, putting her clear of the rest of the field. Second-placed Ekaterina Alexandrova compiled 300 double faults, while Alycia Parks hit 296. For context, Italy’s Camila Giorgi holds the record for the most double faults in a single season (458 in 2015).

Initially, Gauff worked with grip expert Matt Daly, whom she hired at the end of last year’s US Open. Daly’s scope of work involved strengthening Gauff’s forehand and serve. While they won the French Open as a team in early June, that partnership only lasted until August.

Two matches that accentuated Gauff’s serving woes were against Moyuka Uchijima and Danielle Collins in Indian Wells (21 double faults) and Montreal (23 double faults), respectively. These numbers suggested that her service was not sustainable and a coaching change was needed. Gauff brought in renowned biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan, who famously helped Aryna Sabalenka overcome her serving yips three years ago.

Efforts to help solve her troublesome serve have only partially paid off. Gauff won her second title of the season in Wuhan without dropping a set, but was eliminated in the group stage at the WTA Finals, hitting an unimpressive 17 double faults in the loss to Jessica Pegula. Gauff is the first woman to hit as many as 400 double faults in back-to-back seasons in the Open Era. Last year, she accumulated 430 according to WTA stats.

Statistically, the serve was her weakness, but Gauff’s return game was decisive and efficient. She led in two important stats. Gauff won 48.8% of return points this season, which is the highest among tour regulars (eight or more matches), and she also won the most return games (46.3%).
