Coco Gauff booked her spot in the Miami Open semi-finals with a hard-fought win over Belinda Bencic, coming through 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 on Tuesday.
Despite dropping the second set, Gauff regained control in the decider to finish strong and secure her place in the last four.
Bencic had no shortage of chances to pull even at times but couldn’t capitalise. Gauff’s ability to chase down balls and defend under pressure made a big difference, especially late in the match.
After the win, she was asked about her speed and who she thinks is the quickest player on tour.
“I definitely think that on court I am the fastest,” Gauff told reporters in Miami. “People don’t like it when I say it, but I feel like I have enough tape to show that.
“100 metres I feel I would be pretty good. Sloane [Stephens] is pretty fast when she is in her prime. Iga [Swiatek] is really fast. [Maria] Sakkari is fast.
“I think 100 metres is different. I feel I would definitely be in the top three or top four for sure.
“Over 200 metres, though, that’s where Gauff thinks she has a real edge. She said: “The longer the race, the better for me.”
Gauff has said before that she’s a slow starter and joked about not being suited for sprint races either, adding: “I would be down to try it, but I don’t think the 100 metres is my race.”
After her win against Bencic, Gauff shared her thoughts from Miami Gardens.
Every time we play it’s a long match. It took a lot of running today, some falls. I’m really proud of how I fought today.”
She also spoke about managing what has been a testing week overall: “That’s been a theme of the week … My opponent raised her level today. But also so was able to raise it in third”.
