Gilbert predicts a deeper Roland Garros run for Jodar over Fonseca

Rafael Jodar and Joao Fonseca are making their mark as two of the most promising young players on the men’s tour.

Jodar first grabbed attention at the Barcelona Open, reaching the semifinals before losing to Arthur Fils. He’s since backed that up with quarterfinal appearances in both Madrid and Rome.

The Spaniard is now set for his second appearance in a Grand Slam main draw, looking to build on his recent momentum.

Fonseca hasn’t had quite the same impact this year following a strong 2025 season, but he has shown flashes of form, including a quarterfinal run in Monte Carlo.

Both teenagers will be hoping for a good showing in Paris, but Coco Gauff’s former coach, Brad Gilbert, believes Jodar is more likely to go deeper into the tournament.

Brad Gilbert weighs in on Rafael Jodar’s prospects at Roland Garros

Speaking on the ‘Big T’ podcast, Gilbert was asked who he believes will go further between the two teenagers. “I’m going Jodar,” he replied.

“I kind of like his draw, he’s in the same section as Fritz. I like where he’s going in the draw, I think he’s going to make a deep run and you could have had either Jodar or Fonseca in the same third round as Sinner.

“Now, all of a sudden you put them both on the different side of the draw, I feel like it’s not going to surprise me if anybody makes a deep run over there. But of those two I’m going Jodar.”

Fonseca finds himself in Novak Djokovic’s quarter and could face the Serb as early as round three. Meanwhile, Jodar’s main obstacle is Alexander Zverev, but they wouldn’t meet until the quarterfinals if both players advance that far.

First round opponents for Fonseca and Jodar

Jodar opens his campaign against American Aleksandar Kovacevic, a player he hasn’t crossed paths with before on the ATP Tour.

Fonseca, meanwhile, will begin against a qualifier. Should he advance, there’s a possibility of meeting Dino Prizmic in the second round—the same Prizmic who recently defeated Djokovic in Rome.

As for Jodar’s potential second-round matchup, it’ll be either Gabriel Diallo or James Duckworth standing across the net.

Both players are seeded inside the top 30, with Jodar sitting at 27th and Fonseca just behind at 28th.
