Daniil Medvedev entered his fifth consecutive quarterfinal since the US Open 2025 after beating Lorenzo Sonego 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 at the Paris Masters 2025. The Russian will be up against the 3rd-seeded Alexander Zverev in his Quarterfinal match. In the process, the 2020 Paris Masters winner made it to his first Quarterfinals in the tournament since 2021.
Following his win in Paris over Sonego, the Russian was interviewed, where he was asked how his win would help his 2026 season. The 2021 US Open winner agreed that it indeed helps his confidence, especially after potentially avoiding being dropped out of the top 20 rankings in the ATP.
"Of course, great. Even in terms of ranking points. If I had continued the way I played in the U.S., I probably would have dropped out of the top 20. Then it's tougher because you can meet Sinner, Alcaraz, Zverev, Fritz, whoever in the early rounds," said a relieved Medvedev after his win over Sonego.
The change in his coaching personnel seemed to be slowly working in his favor. Medvedev added that it's tougher to climb up the rankings and was happy to be back on track slightly. The 2021 Paris Masters winner felt he could potentially end the season on a good note by climbing up the rankings.
"So it's a bit tougher to go up the rankings. I'm happy that I'm playing well, going deep in the tournaments, and climbing up the rankings. Probably #12 or #13, I don't even know. If I can push a bit more, it would be great to climb even more," Medvedev added in the post-match talk.
