Russia’s Daniil Medvedev has signed up for the doubles category at the French Open. The second Grand Slam of the year will begin from May 27 where players from all over the world will participate to showcase their talent and secure the ultimate prize.
Russia’s Medvedev has surprised a few by deciding to register for the doubles category as well. According to a report published by Tennis.com, the 29-year-old has registered himself along with partner Marcelo Demoliner in the doubles category.
It is not clear why Medvedev has decided to take that step, especially considering his poor record at Roland Garros. The French Open remains the only major competition where the Moscow-born star has not been able to cement a spot in the semifinal or beyond. His best outing while playing in Paris came in 2021, when he lost to Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 7-6, 7-5.
It will be the first time since 2018 that the Russian tennis star will compete in the doubles category event at a Grand Slam. Medvedev has been going through a rough patch. He has not won a single competition since the start of 2024. This year, he has played in 28 matches, winning 18 times and losing 10 times.
The reigning world number 11 has featured in 10 competitions this season but has not been able to register a spot in the final of any of them. His best appearances have been playing in the semifinals on two occasions. He featured in the last-four clash of the Open 13 in Marseille back in February, where he lost to Hamad Medjedovic in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-2. Medvedev’s other appearance in the semifinal came at the Indian Wells, where he came second-best against Denmark’s Holger Rune, who also came out on top in straight sets with a score of 7-5, 6-4.
