Nick Kyrgios lost in the second round of the Australian Open to top seed Daniil Medvedev and said afterwards he believes he’s the best player in the world at the moment.

Kyrgios hasn’t played much tennis in recent months but is notorious for bringing his own party to his home-crowd in Australia and the fans lap up his on-court antics and unorthodox playing style.

After winning his first round clash against Brit Liam Broady in a straight-set match packed with underarm serves and ‘tweeners’, Kyrgios was drawn in a much tougher challenge against number two seed Daniil Medvedev in the second round.

And while the Russian eventually won in four sets, 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, the entertaining match was closely fought and afterwards the Australian said he was proud of himself against such good opposition.

“I’m incredibly proud of my performance today, ” said Kyrgios.

“I believe that match up wise, I think if you asked everyone on tour, they would probably vote him (Medvedev) best player in the world at the moment.

“His consistency, every game he doesn’t drop his level, he shows up every game, no matter what the score is, no matter how much pressure he’s under, he never gets flustered”

Krygios was pleased with both his service and return game and admitted he couldn’t have done any more to stop Medvedev winning.

“He (Medvedev) just has so much belief in his game, he led the tour in wins last year. He’s just so confident right now.

“To be honest I threw everything I could at him. I thought I served consistently 220 kilometers an hour for three and a half hours almost, played pretty well from the back, and created plenty of opportunities on return games.”

Medvedev will now face Dutch player Botic Van De Zandschulp, whose second round opponent Richard Gasquet retired in the third set after losing 10 games in a row.
