Denis Shapovalov admitted he was as surprised as anyone else to see him run over Alexander Zverev in straight sets at the Australian Open.

Zverev entered the tournament as one of the favourites to win it, especially after Novak Djokovic was not allowed to play.

However, Shapovalov ended his dreams of a maiden major in Melbourne this year with a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 win, and he is understandably delighted with how he is playing right now.

“It’s probably the one I least expected to finish in three,” Shapovalov said.

“I’m very happy with my performance, definitely happy with where my game is at.

“I think off the ground I was playing really well, really feeling my shots off both wings.

“I played pretty smart today, it felt like things were going my way early on.

“I lost a little bit of momentum mid-way in the second set but fought well to come back and just kind of rolled with it after.”

The win has earned Shapovalov a quarterfinal clash with Rafael Nadal, and it’s one he is seriously looking forward to.

“It’s always an honour to go up against a guy like Rafa,” he said.

“It’s always going to be a battle against him. It’s going to be a tough one and I’m definitely going to enjoy it.”
