Coco Gauff picked up a win at the Wuhan Open, but even with the trophy in hand, she added another unwanted record to her collection.

Despite her strong play throughout the tournament and a convincing win over Jessica Pegula in the final, Gauff’s campaign wasn’t without its blemishes.

But Gauff continued to add to a disappointing record, even though she won every match she played in China. This continued a trend that has followed her through much of 2024.

Gauff reaches 400 double faults for the second consecutive season

Coco Gauff has collected plenty of trophies in 2025, but there’s still one aspect of her game that seems to be holding her back from reaching another level.

Her serve has been an ongoing issue, and double faults have become a frequent part of her matches.

This was never more evident than during her Wuhan Open semi-final against Jasmine Paolini, where the pair traded 11 consecutive breaks of serve.

Across 2025, Gauff has struggled with double faults, leading to an unwanted milestone she’d rather have avoided.

She’s now up to 405 for the year, which puts her well ahead of Ekaterina Alexandrova, who is second on the list with 280. The gap between them highlights just how significant this issue has become for Gauff.

This isn’t the first time it’s happened either. After hitting over 400 double faults last year as well, Gauff has now become the first player in WTA history to reach that number in back-to-back seasons.

Coco Gauff equals eight-year record at Wuhan Open

Gauff has often found success during the WTA’s Asian swing, using it as a springboard into the Australian Open. The American won the China Open in 2024 and added another title in Wuhan to her growing list of achievements.

With this latest win, she becomes just the second player to take home both titles since their introduction, following Caroline Garcia’s Beijing-Wuhan double back in 2017. Up next for Gauff is likely the WTA Finals, which get underway in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on November 1.
