The WTA 1000 Canadian Open Montreal 2025 will take place from July 27th to August 7th with a 96-player draw, led by Americans who occupy five of the top eight seeded positions. Three top-10 players have withdrawn from the tournament, notably world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka.

With Sabalenka's absence, Coco Gauff leads the draw as the first seed and main favorite, especially returning to hardcourts. Nevertheless, players like Iga Swiatek – recent Wimbledon champion – and two-time defending champion Jessica Pegula are the names arriving with a clear ambition to claim the title.

Among the seeds, Amanda Anisimova, Madison Keys, and Emma Navarro also stand out, looking to quickly build confidence in the North American swing with an eye on the US Open, surely their ultimate goal. Jasmine Paolini and Mirra Andreeva complete the top 8 favorites who will be vying for the title starting Monday, July 28th.

While the 32 seeds receive a first-round bye and await their opponents, there are several significant names that will clash in the opening round. Especially noteworthy is former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu, who drew two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejcikova.

First Quarter: Gauff faces tough draw in Montreal, potential Collins battle looms

Coco Gauff (1st seed) did not have an easy draw and anticipates a potentially tough debut against Danielle Collins. The former world No. 7 has dropped in the rankings and did not secure a seeded spot – currently positioned as world No. 61. "Danimal" will debut against a qualifier and will be a challenging opponent for Gauff in the second round. Should she advance, Serbia's Olga Danilovic appears as a potential third-round opponent.

Also leading the first quarter is Jasmine Paolini (7th seed), who will face a qualifier in her second-round debut. The Italian then potentially faces Ashlyn Krueger (26th seed) in the fourth round, while the highest-ranked player on her path to the quarterfinals would be Russia's Ekaterina Alexandrova in a potential fourth-round match. Nevertheless, Paolini is likely one of the favorites who got a more favorable draw.

Second Quarter: Andreeva & Navarro face gauntlet with Rybakina and Vondrousova

The second quarter is loaded with renowned players, led by Mirra Andreeva. The Russian awaits her opponent from the Grand Slam champions' clash between Bianca Andreescu and Barbora Krejcikova. Furthermore, on the path to the quarterfinals, names like Leylah Fernandez, Marta Kostyuk, or former Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova appear.

However, the quarter not only burdened Andreeva; Emma Navarro will also have a tough road. In the lower part of the second draw, American No. 5 Emma Navarro will have to overcome the winner between Rebecca Marino and a qualifier. But things get complicated afterward, with Elena Rybakina and Linda Noskova on the American's path.

Third Quarter: Pegula's title defense starts strong, Anisimova eyes deep run

Third seed Jessica Pegula (3rd seed) is one of the players to beat in the draw, as the two-time defending champion who has consistently shown herself to be one of the best on hardcourts for several years. Last year, she won the title in Canada and reached the finals of both the Cincinnati Open and the US Open. The American could face Maria Sakkari in her debut – who debuts against Carson Branstine. Potential clashes against Naomi Osaka or Jelena Ostapenko loom even before reaching the quarterfinals.

Also situated in the third quarter is Amanda Anisimova (5th seed), who awaits Sorana Cirstea or Lulu Sun in her debut. Should she advance, she could potentially face Emma Raducanu or Peyton Stearns. Additionally, Elina Svitolina and Anna Kalinskaya appear as significant threats to reach the quarterfinals.

Fourth Quarter: Swiatek's Wimbledon momentum, Keys seeks redemption

The final part of the draw features Iga Swiatek – the recent Wimbledon champion who will have a great opportunity to close the gap on Sabalenka in the ranking race. The Pole comes into the hardcourt swing full of confidence, and it remains to be seen if she can replicate her SW19 success. She would debut against the winner between Yulia Putintseva and a qualifier, while further along, potential opponents include Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Clara Tauson.

The other favorite in the lower section to reach the quarterfinals is the 2025 Australian Open champion Madison Keys, who awaits a potential second-round clash against Tatjana Maria. She drew Rebecca Sramkova in a potential third round, while players like Karolina Muchova or Belinda Bencic could follow. Undoubtedly a difficult draw for Keys, who suffered a disappointment in the third round of Wimbledon and will look to redeem herself on hardcourts.

Potential Quarterfinals

Coco Gauff (1) vs Jasmine Paolini (7)

Mirra Andreeva (4) vs Emma Navarro (8)

Amanda Anisimova (5) vs Jessica Pegula (3)

Madison Keys (6) vs Iga Swiatek (2)
