Emma Raducanu will not continue her resurgence at the Canadian Open after crashing out fairly easily in the third round to fifth seed Amanda Anisimova who of course reached the final of Wimbledon last month so on paper perhaps would've been expected to produce the goods against her.
Anisimova did just that as she won through 6-2, 6-1 in the third round of the Canadian Open. Albeit Raducanu had form of previously beating Anisimova sealing both of their previous meetings but she rarely looked like extending that run as she held serve only once in either set in Montreal. A poor return for the Brit.
Anisimova came from 40-15 down to break Raducanu in the second game of the match and the British No.1 broke back immediately but was unable to fashion another break point at all in the contest as the power dominance of the American saw her barely muster a finger on her.
Her dominance continued in the second set as Raducanu won just eight points on her own serve and was forced to avoid a bagel set loss after losing the first five games. Anisimova hit 29 winners to 25 unforced errors while Raducanu was able to just hit five winners at all in the match against 22 unforced errors. The World No.7 has won 14 out of her last 17 matches on tour since the start of the grass court season and she becomes only the ninth American to win 50 career matches at WTA 1000 over recent years since the format's introduction back in 2009.
Anisimova eventually served it out 6-1 in the second to move through and she won't face another part of the Washington semi-final line-up. Anna Kalinskaya who had a great week last time out in DC was roundly trounced by Elina Svitolina. The Ukrainian who always seems to show up around the time of Grand Slams will be looking to do so again heading towards the US Open as she took down Kalinskaya 6-1, 6-1 for a spot in the Quarter-Finals.
In addition it was a mixed bag night overall for top names as Iga Swiatek needed little over an hour to ease past Eva Lys 6-2, 6-2 who was made to run all around the court, a point she poked fun at on social media afterwards.
"@iga.swiatek always ending my good runs lol. tried my best, came a little closer this time. we appreciate the small steps. BIGGEST thank you to the amazing fans in montreal. you made me feel loved. until next year," she wrote on Instagram while also saying "Legit what i said to my box 20 mins into the match," about being made to run marathons by Swiatek.

The mixed bag saw Jessica Pegula dumped out by Anastasija Sevastova with the Latvian who previously had lengthy spells out with a torn ACL and becoming a mother rising to the occasion once more as the American's indifferent form continued. Karolina Muchova revived hers though. After saying she might need another wrist surgery, she found a way past Belinda Bencic.
It was a 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 win for Muchova who has a healthy haul of points to defend again from the US Open. Many expected her to kick on again after last year's epic semi-final run but she didn't manage it with her wrist continuing to plague her. But when healthy she is one of the best on tour and she will hope that she can thrive from here. It is a first top 20 win of the season for Muchova and she now moves on. A big win for the Czech ace.
