Emma Raducanu’s US Open run came to an end in the third round, closing out her first Grand Slam appearance with new coach Francisco Roig.
The pair linked up just ahead of the Cincinnati tournament and quickly appeared to work well together, following a strong showing from Raducanu in Washington where she reached the semi-finals.

She then put together steady performances in both Montreal and Cincinnati, giving herself a solid lead-up into New York. However, she ran into Elena Rybakina, who was simply too much on the day.
After the loss, Raducanu remained optimistic about her ability to return to that level in future tournaments. But whether that path forward will still include Roig isn’t certain yet.
Raducanu responded: “Yeah. Right now we’re working through to the end of the year, and I’m looking forward to just getting back to work really.
“It’s only been three weeks, but I think it’s been a pretty successful three weeks in the sense of we’ve made good improvement, and I think there are certain parts of my game which have gotten better for sure.
“Today, you know, my weaknesses were highlighted, but I think, you know, it’s only been three weeks and he can’t really work miracles, you know. So I know we’re doing good work, and I just look forward to continuing.”
She then went on to discuss how opponents tend to elevate their performances when playing against her.
Raducanu has shown more consistency this year but hasn’t managed to break through against the elite tier of players.
While she’s clearly capable of holding her own across most of the tour, those matchups against higher-ranked opponents remain a hurdle she hasn’t cleared yet.
The head-to-head record doesn’t help much either. Raducanu has now dropped eight straight matches against top-ten opponents and sits at three wins from 16 attempts overall.
None came against dominant names like Rybakina or Swiatek. Instead, those wins were over Maria Sakkari (twice), Jessica Pegula (by retirement), and Emma Navarro (by retirement).
The pieces are there for a breakthrough—her talent isn’t in question—and Roig seems like a steadying presence. The hope is that by next season she’ll be ready not just to challenge but also win consistently at every level.
