Coco Gauff feels she played much better against Naomi Osaka in the fourth round of the US Open than she did in the previous rounds. In the match against Osaka, held on Monday (September 1), Gauff hit three aces, while the double fault tally was five.
Because of her serve problems, Gauff started to cry mid-match and after the match against Donna Vekic in the second round. Although she has now suffered two back-to-back defeats in the fourth round of her home Grand Slam tournament, Gauff only wants to think positively about her campaign.
Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, lifted the French Open this year by defeating Aryna Sabalenka. It was her third back-to-back final on clay following the Madrid Open and the Italian Open, where she lost to Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini, respectively.
After the match, I was really disappointed. I kind of broke down to my team. Then, hearing their perspectives and everything, it definitely is a lot of positive things. I think if I kept the way I was going in Cincinnati to here, I would have been out in the first round. So, I think where my serve started from the start of the tournament to today was a big improvement.

Osaka, who will now be playing a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the first time since lifting her fourth Major at the 2021 Australian Open, has tied her head-to-head record over the 21-year-old to 3-3. The Japanese ace also made it to the quarterfinals of the US Open since her victory here in 2020.
Osaka is still chasing her first tour-level title since clinching the 2021 Australian Open. Since that win, the 27-year-old has featured in three finals, which also include this year’s ASB Classic and the Canadian Open. In Auckland, she was forced to give the walkover to Clara Tauson, while in Montreal, home favorite Victoria Mboko came from a set down to clinch her career’s first WTA title.
Coco Gauff has been a part of the WTA Tour since 2018, so people seem to forget that at present, she is only 21 years old. Gauff, however, is convinced that if she gains more experience, she will be able to fix the errors that she is frequently committing during her matches.
I feel like I put so much pressure on myself at my age, at 21, and I realized like how much the girls on tour are being successful at like 25, 26 at those ages. So, I think for me it just gets me excited to realize if I have like four more years of just working as hard as I am right now and actually doing the right things, like where my game could be.

While Gauff is expected to feature at the China Open next in her bid to defend her title as well as start her campaign on the Asian swing, Naomi Osaka will be hoping to beat Karolina Muchova to grab a spot in the semifinals. If she beats the 2023 French Open finalist, she could lock horns with Iga Swiatek in the last four. Swiatek, on her part, has to go past Amanda Anisimova to meet Osaka.
Osaka’s performance at the Canadian Open helped her rankings as she finally played a Grand Slam tournament as a seeded player after a long time. She has reached the 19th spot on the live rankings table, and this only means she is inching closer to the top 10 rankings once again.
