ESPN has confirmed major changes to its tennis commentary team ahead of next week’s Australian Open, with several former legends of the sport no longer part of the network’s on-site coverage.

The decision has sparked surprise across the tennis community, given the experience and popularity of the figures involved.

The shake-up comes just days before the year’s first Grand Slam, leaving fans wondering why ESPN has decided to move on from two of its most familiar voices.

Both Pam Shriver and Brad Gilbert, long-time analysts and former players, have been dropped from the broadcaster’s coverage plans for Melbourne.

ESPN confirms departures of Pam Shriver and Brad Gilbert

According to TalkSport, ESPN has opted not to renew contracts for two of its most recognized tennis experts. Shriver, a former Wimbledon doubles champion, and Gilbert, a longtime coach and analyst, have been central figures in the network’s Grand Slam coverage for years.

Speaking to the outlet, Shriver said, “It’s disappointing to not be part of the coverage this year, especially with the Australian Open being such a special event for tennis fans around the world. I’ve loved bringing insights and analysis to viewers, and I’ll miss being part of that team atmosphere.”

Gilbert, who recently coached Coco Gauff to her first Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open, also shared his reaction. “I’ve really enjoyed my time calling matches and breaking down the game for fans. ESPN has been a great platform, and I’m thankful for that. Right now, I’ll just focus on the coaching side and keep helping players reach their potential.”

The network’s statement emphasized its intent to refresh its lineup with new perspectives while continuing its commitment to world class tennis coverage.

Still, fans have voiced disappointment online, calling the pair’s absence a major loss for insight and personality in ESPN’s commentary booth.

ESPN’s new direction ahead of the Australian Open

The broadcaster will move forward with a streamlined commentary team for Melbourne, featuring existing anchors alongside new voices.

The shake-up is part of a broader strategy to modernize presentation across major sporting events and integrate more digital and social media-driven content.

In a brief response to the reaction, ESPN stated, “We appreciate the contributions of all our tennis analysts and wish them the best. Our focus remains on delivering comprehensive, engaging coverage of the Australian Open and the 2026 tennis season.”

Shriver and Gilbert were both widely respected not only for their tennis knowledge but also for their ability to connect with fans.

Their chemistry on-air and deep experience brought credibility and color to every broadcast. Many viewers have taken to social media to thank them for their work and to express disappointment over ESPN’s decision.
