'Every step we take is judged,' Iga Swiatek reveals the darker side of being a global icon
Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Polish star Iga Swiatek has had her fair share of struggles while on top of the tour. She has also had ups and downs, mainly due to the presence of social media. A few years ago, social media did not have as much effect on players as it does now, mainly because of its easy accessibility.

Swiatek, who was young when she got into the main draw of the WTA, did not expect the impact of social media on her life. In a recent short documentary by her brand On, they revealed a few struggles of Swiatek.

Being an athlete now is becoming a public figure. I wasn't aware of that when I wanted to be a tennis player. That this is going to be a big part of life. With social media everywhere and people sharing every piece of information, it's just more pressure because of the fact that every step we take is practically watched and often judged by people. Said Iga Swiatek in the documentary

As shown in the pictures, fans did troll the Pole very often. With every failure came a wave of reactions from the fans, which were even more disappointing.

This resulted in her watching every step and trying not to be judged by others. As of now, Swiatek has been dominating, and the criticism is less, but it sure can swing either way with a change in form.

Iga Swiatek looks to join a select club of people in an attempt for a fourth title win

WTA No. 1 Iga Swiatek is the person to watch out for in the draw. After a crazy start to her clay season, she is in line for a fourth Roland Garros title. After two consecutive wins in Madrid and Rome, the 22-year-old targets a third one in Roland Garros.

If she has a successful title defense this year, the Pole will join a small group of elite people. She would also get her name in the history books. She would be joining Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, and Justine Henin to win four French Open titles.

I'm No. 1. So, I’m the favorite everywhere if you look at rankings. But rankings don’t play, so ... I’ll do everything step by step and we’ll see. Said Iga Swiatek.

With the French Open approaching by the minute, Swiatek enters as Work No. 1 and will hope to end as the number one woman in her draw.
