Former ATP pro Mardy Fish took a subtle dig at Jannik Sinner by dismissing his hard-court stat. Sinner’s stat on hardcourts last year is the third best on the ATP Tour.
Last year, he won 55 matches and lost just three on the surface. Roger Federer occupies the first two spots with 50-1 and 59-2 win-loss records in 2005 and 2006, respectively. When TNT Sports shared the stats on X, Fish noticed it and dropped a comment that implied that the 23-year-old did not play against tougher opponents as compared to the Swiss maestro at that time.
Now do who Roger had to deal with against who Sinner has to deal with… I’ll hang up and listen.

Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt , Ivan Ljubicic , Richard Gasquet , and Marat Safin were some of the opponents Federer faced during that time. Sinner played against Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, and Daniil Medvedev, among others, last year. He lifted eight titles, seven of which he won on hard courts and one on grass, at the Halle Open.
The World No.1 is on a 22-match winning streak on hard courts since his three-set defeat to Alcaraz in the China Open final last year. Sinner has already one hard-court title under his belt- the Australian Open, which he defended by beating Zverev. He is in Cincinnati, where he is aiming to defend the title. If he wins, he will become the first player to defend this title since Federer (2014-2015).
The Cincinnati Masters is Jannik Sinner‘s first tournament since his Wimbledon triumph. He has secured his fastest win of the season in his opening-round match against Daniel Elahi Galan in just 59 minutes.
But in the third round, the match would have extended to the decider as Sinner was on the cusp of losing the second set against Gabriel Diallo. After his second-round match, Sinner sat for an interview with the Tennis Channel and talked about the three things he still needs to perfect- serve, net game, and drop shots.
Serve. I feel like that my serve is getting better. But I still feel like that we have some percentage we can aim to get better. Net game, as you said, is trying to approach. Drop shots, you know, trying to also see on the other side of the net what’s going on, and yeah, just, you know, general mixing up the game.
Sinner will next lock horns with Adrian Mannarino, the qualifier, who knocked out home favorite Tommy Paul in three sets. Sinner has played three matches against him, winning all.
We have to be ready for every situation on the court, because everyone plays great, great tennis, and if you drop, if you don’t play 100%, but maybe you play 98%, this 2% can make a big, big difference. So, you know, it’s everything has to be quite perfect.
Jannik Sinner added
Sinner has so far reached four finals and lifted the Australian Open and the Wimbledon trophies. Last year in Cincy, the four-time Grand Slam champion beat Frances Tiafoe to take home his career’s third Masters 1000 title. Sinner last lifted a Masters 1000 at the Shanghai Masters last year by beating Novak Djokovic.
Since then, he made it to only one final in his category- at the Italian Open this year, which he lost to Carlos Alcaraz. The 23-year-old was scheduled to play the Canadian Open before Cincinnati, but he withdrew from the tournament. After Cincinnati, Sinner will aim to defend his US Open title.
