The clay court season has wrapped up, and the second Grand Slam tournament of the year at Roland Garros has had a major impact on both the ATP and WTA rankings.

Carlos Alcaraz won his second Roland Garros singles title — although there was a period when a successful defence seemed unlikely, with Jannik Sinner holding three championship points in the final.

Despite Alcaraz taking victory, it is still Sinner who stays ahead of him at the top of the ATP rankings.

There was change at the top of the WTA rankings too, but women’s singles champion Coco Gauff also remains in second place, just like Alcaraz.

While Gauff remains inside the top two, it’s a different story for a former Wimbledon champion, who has slipped to her lowest ranking in eight years.

Marketa Vondrousova falls to her lowest WTA ranking in eight years

Marketa Vondrousova shocked the world when she won Wimbledon in 2023, but it has been a tricky period for the Czech WTA player since then.

The 25-year-old, who has also been a Roland Garros finalist and Olympic silver medallist, has dealt with a string of injuries over the past couple of years.

After losing in the first round of her Wimbledon defence last year, Vondrousova underwent surgery on her left shoulder and did not return until the start of the 2025 season.

The road back hasn’t been easy. Vondrousova was forced to pull out of the Australian Open after another injury setback.

She also missed most of the clay court season, returning just in time for Roland Garros, where she managed to reach the third round.

Although she did pull off one upset in Paris, Vondrousova couldn’t defend the ranking points from her quarter-final run the previous year, causing another plunge in her position.

Vondrousova was already down at world number 96, and has now fallen a further 69 places to world number 165.

This is her lowest WTA ranking since April 2017, when she was just 17 years old.

What is next for Marketa Vondrousova?

With the grass court season now underway, Vondrousova has time to climb back up the standings — although she is set to take a further ranking hit as she looks to find full fitness before Wimbledon.

According to the entry lists, it seems Vondrousova is skipping all grass court warm-up events and will only play Wimbledon.

She reached the last-16 at the Berlin Open in 2024, but with those points soon expiring, she is set for another big drop until after Wimbledon.

The good news for Vondrousova is that she only has 70 ranking points to defend until the end of the 2025 season.

If she can get back to full fitness and stay healthy, there is still time for her to climb back up the WTA rankings.
