The end was always coming for Fabio Fognini who announced already his intention to retire at the end of 2025 but that has now come sooner after he thought it was best to retire on the Carlos Alcaraz Wimbledon epic.
Fognini called a press conference confirming that he would retire immediately with the Italian barely winning matches before nearly shocking the world with an epic five setter against the defending champion. "It’s the best way to say goodbye," he said today.
Alcaraz chimed in at the time gushing about his respect for the Italian who paved the way for the likes of Jannik Sinner who now leads the way. "I have big respect for him. Everything that he has done in his career, what he has done today.
"I love watching him play. I'm just glad to have shared the court once again with him, that I have shared the locker rooms, the tournament with him. Just amazing. I have big respect for him."
A career that has seen the highest of highs. He has nine ATP singles titles including one Monte-Carlo Masters crown. He has also won seven ATP doubles titles and one Slam in doubles at the Australian Open.
He has a best ranking of World No.9 in singles in 2019 and World No.7 in doubles and while he announced his intention to call it a day a while ago, he has finally done so a bit earlier than expected.
He earned 17 wins over top 10 opponents in his career including an epic five set win against Rafael Nadal at the US Open in 2015 and victory against the then World No.1 Andy Murray in Rome back in 2017. Often an achilles heel for the top names, the flamboyant veteran has called it a day on his own terms.
